Frequently Asked Questions, Answered

We LOVE getting messages from our customers to hear about their favorite product or to help them find one in their stores. We find ourselves answering a lot of questions, too. So we’ve compiled a list of some of our most frequently asked questions to make being a Homestead Creamery fanatic juts a little bit easier.

Product Questions

Let’s talk about our products! There’s plenty of ways our products are unique, from our pasteurization process to our glass bottles. Our uniqueness can sometimes incite a lot of questions.

Q: Can I Recycle My Glass Bottle?

A: Yes! Of course, glass products are generally recyclable anyway but we want you to recycle through us with our bottle return program! Anywhere you buy your glass Homestead Creamery bottles from should also accept your empty returned glass bottles. Learn more about how to participate and why we do it.

Q: Where is the Expiration/Sell By Date?

A: Great questions! We always want you to enjoy the freshest, most flavorful dairy possible. On our milk, you can find the Sell By date on the colored cap. Our ice cream quarts, you can find a sticker on the bottom.

Q: Why is there a thick cream floating in my milk?

A: You may have picked up our creamline whole milk with the gold cap! We leave 100% of the cream in this product to give it the fullest, most natural flavor possible but we do not homogenize it like our red top whole milk. All of that cream rises to the top to provide a thick layer that sometimes needs to be broken with a butter knife. As with any of our milk, you should still shake it before you drink it!

Farm & Creamery Questions

Something that sets our products apart from the rest is how the farms operate and how we process our products. We want to be good stewards of the land as well as a safe, responsible creamery that focuses on quality and flavor.

Q: What do your dairy cows eat?

A: While the cows do get to enjoy the nutrients of grazing in the pastures daily, the farmers also want to make sure they get the best nutrition possible. That’s why they feed them a nutritionist-recommended mixture made from minerals and non-GMO crops that are grown right on the same farms!

Q: Is your milk ultra-pasteurized?

A: While some companies choose to ultra pasteurize their milk, we believe it can reduce the quality of the milk. That’s why we choose to minimally pasteurize our milk. This way, any bad bacteria is killed off leaving the good bacteria that gives you good gut health and great tasting milk!

Q: Does your golden milk, eggnog, and custard contain raw eggs?

A: Technically, our eggs are not totally raw because they are pasteurized. The pasteurization process does kill any possible bacteria like Salmonella. However, there are conflicting opinions on whether this means that they are fully cooked or not. If you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant and have concerns about consuming raw egg products, we suggest that you consult a doctor before consuming any of our products with eggs in it.
